Lucca: the walls

The historical centre has a unique wall system. These walls, made of small red bricks from 16th to 17th century, built with the aim of defending Lucca against Florence. This is the most important street of the historical centre of Lucca, the first houses were built around this street, that today is the most important commercial centre of the city, rich in works and a daily meeting point for people of any age, thanks to its large number of typical shop, elegant traditional shops, medieval towers, for exemple the Tower of Hours, which can be visited, and noblemen’s palaces.

San Martino Dome is the finest Romanesque building in Lucca, the impressive facade is a triumph of sculpture, carving and inlay work: it homes the tomb of Ilaria del Carreto as well as Lucca's most famous relic, the Volto Santo.
Palazzo Mansi, known as the Pinacoteca, is a very interesting place to visit: the interior is very rococo in style, oozing silk, mirrors, engravings and gilt-work. It homes important paintings of some of the most important italian painters: Tintoretto and Pontorno.
The museum of Giacomo Puccini, the famous operas composer, houses interesting ogjects of Puccini, for exemple the piano used to compose Turandot. This museum is the seat of Giacomo Puccini Foundation.
The Botanical Garden of Lucca is a 2 hectare garden wanted by Maria Luisa Borbone in 1820. It is divided in two principal areas: the "Arboretum", the largest section of the garden that holds a collection of trees and shrubs, most of which are exotic, first planted in the 19th century, and the Hortus Sanitatis that hold a comprehensive collection of medicinal plants.There is a collection of several plants of scientific and naturalistic value.

Every September in Lucca is hold San Michele's fair and Septermber Lucca's Fair. These two fairs represent a unique, big fair: in Borgo Giannotti and in San Michele Square there are lots of bancarellas, of every kind.

Every third Saturday and Sunday of the month, artigianal open-air market, one of the most famous artigianal market in Italy. All around the Dome you'll find more than 300 exhibitors ofv furnitures, dresses, toys, bijouterie, linen, jewels.
